GENERATION LOSS
Generation Loss is a technical term used to describe the degradation of data, and quality of data across subsequent copies. It’s a term I became familiar with, only after having developed a practice of ceremonially photographing an image that caught my attention, shortly after my HIV positive diagnosis in 2009. As a sort of catharsis to mark that date of June 19, 2009, I have been photographing the photograph ever since.
I owe my life to the generations of people who fought and continue to fight for access to life saving, life changing treatment. To say I’m grateful to be able to have access to that is a tremendous understatement of course, and yet- Treatment isn’t a cure, and being “functionally cured” is nowhere near the end of the pandemic, or the fight to end it.
In the ongoing race (*staggeringly painful lumber) towards the end of the AIDS and COVID-19 pandemic, I can’t help but view through a lens of infinite optimism, and sadness at the prospect that the outcomes we’ll be told to learn to live with, might just bring about a new rise of viral classism, and further “functional cures”.
